Where It Started:
Miat Magazine was a nameless though that Duncan – my boyfriend, and I thought about making to document his car. Later I decided to make it a reality for his birthday as a surprise.
The Drawing Board
First I created a Word Doc with all of the information I wanted to include, special mentions and links back to each part I referenced.
Making It Real
After drawing out what I had planned in my head, I took to InDesign and created a 32-page spread and a rough draft of what the magazine was going to look like.
Importing Photos
Duncan had taken all of the images featured in the magazine, so I went into his lightroom, downloaded all of the images I wanted, and started giving them a home on certain pages.

Goal
The goal of this project was to create something timeless and memorable for my boyfriends birthday. I couldn’t seem to come you with one solid idea until I remembered that we had chatted about creating a book about Miata’s.
Tone
The desired attitude and tone of this project was a portrayal of how much love, spirit, and dedication is poured into Layla the Miata. This was achieved though editing photos after every photoshoot, putting each photo into a album, sharing all the time, creating a color scheme that matches the personality of the car and the photos and being able to out how much this car is valued and loved into words.
Solution
Integral to the thoughts and ideas that brought this magazine to life was an extraordinarily detailed and fun drafting process! It has become a portfolio piece that I adore and a gift to the person I love! Here’s to the many more volumes of Miat Magazine to come.
Audience
Although this magazine was curated and crafted just for one individual, the target audience for similar projects includes other Miata Owners, Car Photographers, Car Enthusiasts, and people who want to learn more about how incredible the Mazda Miata is.
Now that you know who this magazine is for let me tell you why. The Miata is not just a car, it is an experience and the culture behind why it is such a lovely vehicle.
